A former star of Strictly Come Dancing recently opened up about the difficult birth of her daughter. Oti Mabuse shared that doctors had warned her to prepare for the sight of her premature baby in an incubator after giving birth. On Christmas Day last year, Oti had announced the birth of her first child with husband Marius Iepure, but a few months later, she revealed that it had been a challenging experience. She had suffered from sepsis, while her daughter was born very premature.
In a recent interview, Oti shared what it was like to see her baby being placed in an incubator just moments after being born. She admitted that she had no idea what to expect and was feeling overwhelmed. "When she was born, she couldn't breathe on her own," Oti recalled. She also shared her experience of joining the Strictly community on WhatsApp, where fans can stay updated with all the latest news and rumors from the dance floor.
Speaking on the Parenting Hell podcast with hosts Rob Beckett and Josh Widdicombe, Oti said that doctors were "really positive" and did a great job of keeping her calm. She was told that babies usually don't cry when they are born, but her daughter was screaming. "And then it stopped," she said. The medical staff then informed her that her daughter needed further attention, but there was no need to panic. Oti praised the doctors and nurses for their calm and reassuring demeanor.
After being prepared for the possibility of shock, Oti was told by a consultant that her daughter would need to stay in the hospital for some time until she could start breathing and eating on her own. "There was someone every day there to keep having conversations with us about the process and her progress and how she was doing," Oti shared. She was relieved to see her daughter making progress and excelling quickly.
After a week in the incubator, her daughter was finally able to be taken out, but she still needed to use a breathing and feeding tube. The breathing tube was removed after two weeks, while the feeding one took a month. Oti's daughter spent a total of six weeks in the hospital, and the dancer expressed her gratitude towards the medical staff and other parents who provided support during this difficult time.
Although Oti spoke positively about getting through those weeks, she also admitted that the experience was traumatic in retrospect. "I think one of my things is that I'm one of those delusional people who deny stress," she said. It took her a couple of months to realize the traumatic nature of her daughter's birth. Oti shared that after giving birth two months early, they had taken some time for themselves to recover from the big shock of their daughter's unexpected premature birth.
Strictly Come Dancing is set to return to BBC later this year, and Oti will not be participating as a professional dancer. She appeared on the show from 2015 to 2022.
