I have to admit, it was a moment I never thought would come. After 36 years of being an avid gamer, I finally packed up my PlayStation 5 and stashed it away in my attic. It's not something I ever imagined doing at the ripe age of 41. But after much contemplation, I made the decision to tuck away my beloved console over the weekend.
I'll be honest, I don't have some profound explanation or grand speech to share about this. I'm just sounding off here, hoping to break up the constant bickering about which console reigns supreme. I've been thinking a lot about why I've lost my passion for gaming. Is it because I now have two young kids to take care of? But if that were the case, why didn't I feel this way five years ago?
Perhaps it's just a midlife crisis, and if I don't find a creative outlet soon, my long-awaited book or game or painting will never see the light of day. Or maybe it's simply the state of the gaming industry today. The lack of originality, the predatory business models, the toxic fan base, and the aimless direction of manufacturers. Or maybe it's just my mind trying to cope with the chaos of the world.
It's probably a combination of all these factors, but lately, I've found myself struggling to find a game that holds my interest for more than a few hours. I've played Baldur's Gate 3, Tekken 8, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, but none of them seem to do it for me. And I know I'm not alone in this, as it seems like more and more gamers are playing less new games and sticking to live service titles.
I can't help but feel like this is all happening while the industry as a whole is going through a creativity drought. Meanwhile, Sony and Microsoft are running around without a clear strategy for the future. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure my interest in gaming will come back eventually. I just hope it happens before the world goes up in flames and we're all living in a real-life version of Fallout.
But hey, that's just my perspective. I know not everyone will agree with me, and that's okay. These are just my thoughts as a lifelong gamer. It seems like a State of Play showcase is on the horizon, and there are rumors about smaller first-party games coming out this year. Oh, and there's also buzz about a PS5 Pro with a special "enhanced mode." Exciting stuff, right?
