Lily Gladstone recently shared her experience of standing on stage at the Oscars and how it transported her back to the time when she was in her mother's womb. The 37-year-old Killers of the Flower Moon star opened up about her nostalgia and memories of her childhood in her recent interview with 60 Seconds. She has been a part of popular TV series like Billions and Under The Bridge, and has also worked in films like Jazzy and Quantum Cowboys. In this interview, she talks about her new drama, Fancy Dance, her responsibilities as an actress, and her unforgettable experience at the Oscars.
When asked about her character Jax in Fancy Dance, Lily shared that she took inspiration from her two boy cousins, Will and Chet. Will's journey of turning his life around and becoming a leader in his community deeply inspired her. On the other hand, Chet, who grew up with her on the Reservation, also played a significant role in shaping her character. These personal connections helped her to flesh out Jax's character and bring her to life on screen.
Lily also revealed her love for the 'powwow' dances that are featured in Fancy Dance. She shared that her parents met on the Reservation and she was born there too. Her mother, who was pregnant with her at the time, used to attend the dances and Lily believes that she even danced along with the music in her womb. Her father would often play powwow music at home, and as a toddler, Lily would start 'grass dancing' which is typically done by men. She also mentioned that she is the first Native American woman to be nominated for Best Actress at the Oscars and feels a sense of responsibility to speak out and represent her community.
When asked about her experience at the Oscars, Lily shared a moment that she will cherish forever. She said that she felt like she was back in her mother's womb, listening to the drum beats and moving along with them. Being front row at the Oscars and witnessing a big drum being brought on stage was a surreal experience for her. She could feel the beat of the drum in her chest and was deeply moved by the representation of the Osage people on such a prestigious platform.
Apart from her work in Fancy Dance, Lily also revealed her childhood dream of being an actor. She shared that she always wanted to be a part of the stories she watched on screen, especially Star Wars, where she wanted to be an Ewok. She believes that the story of indigenous resistance and protecting their land resonated with her, and she is not the only Native kid who loves Ewoks. She also mentioned that her parents were always supportive of her dreams and her father would often say that she will become a movie star and an Oscar winner one day.
Lily's first movie was Jimmy P with Benicio Del Toro in 2013. She shared her experience of working with him and how he recognized her talent right away. She also mentioned that she helped in casting local actors for the film and when she did a scene with Benicio, he complimented her by saying, "You're an actor, aren't you?" This was a pivotal moment for her and she was starstruck by his recognition of her talent.
In the future, Lily hopes to work with renowned directors like Jane Campion and Denis Villeneuve, who she believes are masters of their craft. She is excited about her upcoming project, Fancy Dance, which will be available on Apple TV+ from June 28.
