Hundreds detained in West Bengal finally make it home
In Bhubaneswar and Balasore, a group of more than 300 individuals from Odisha were reportedly held against their will by locals in West Bengal's Paschim Medinipur. However, thanks to the timely intervention of the police, they were able to safely return home on Wednesday. This incident is believed to be a result of the recent attack on migrant workers from West Bengal in Odisha, where they were mistakenly identified as Bangladeshi nationals.

The individuals who were held captive were from Balasore and Mayurbhanj districts and had travelled to Kharika village in Keshpur seeking treatment from a local healer. However, on their way back, they were met with violence from a mob, who not only physically attacked them but also damaged their vehicles. Thankfully, the police were able to step in and rescue the group, ensuring their safe return to Odisha.

According to Additional Director General of Police, Sanjay Kumar, all the individuals were successfully rescued thanks to the efforts of the police. They were dropped off at Laxmannath Gate on the Odisha-Bengal border on Tuesday evening. This incident came to light when some of the affected individuals reached out to Balasore MP Pratap Sarangi, who then informed Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi.

In order to ensure the safety of the detained individuals, senior police officials from both states quickly coordinated their efforts. Sanju Hasina Kulu, the Inspector-in-Charge of Remuna police station, confirmed that 27 people from Remuna block were among those held captive and they have all safely reached Laxmannath Gate. This situation is reminiscent of a similar event that took place on August 10, where 34 people were detained at a construction site in Sambalpur district, under the suspicion of being Bangladeshi nationals. These rising tensions have also resulted in migrant workers returning to Bengal after facing attacks in Jagatsinghpur district.
