Mumbai experienced an unusually heavy rainfall during the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday. The rain continued for hours, causing disruption in the city. Unfortunately, the situation was further aggravated by the drowning of two individuals.
A 30-year-old man, Amit Ashutosh Das, was declared dead after he was found in a pond in Bhayandar at around 8.30 pm on Monday. According to fire brigade personnel, Das was a resident of Fatak Road in Bhayandar and had entered the pond for a swim against the advice of his friends. After he failed to come out after an hour, the fire brigade was informed and his body was retrieved from the pond. A post mortem has been conducted at the nearby Pandit Bhimsen Joshi Civil Hospital and an accidental death report has been registered at the Bhayandar station.
Another incident occurred at Upvan Lake, Thane, when a 17-year-old boy drowned while swimming with four friends at around 1.45pm.
The Mumbai weather department has warned that Mumbai and surrounding areas including catchment areas will receive heavy rains in the next 48-60 hours. Interior Maharashtra too will experience heavy to moderate rains in the coming 48 hours.
