Even Harry Judd, the drummer of McFly, cringes at some of the band's most famous songs. It's a feeling that most of us can relate to when we look back at our younger selves from the 2000s. Whether it's overplucked eyebrows or questionable fashion choices, we all have things we'd rather forget. And don't worry, because McFly feels the same way.
The pop band, made up of Tom Fletcher, Danny Jones, Dougie Poynter, and Harry Judd, rose to fame in 2004 when they were invited by fellow band Busted to join them on tour. Just one year later, they were already winning a Brit Award and had a number one album titled Room on the 3rd Floor. Known for their catchy tunes like All About You, Five Colours in Her Hair, Shine a Light, and Star Girl, the record-breaking boyband still loves performing their hits to enthusiastic crowds even two decades later. However, as Harry revealed in an interview with The Agency, some of the lyrics can feel a bit "cringe" now.
As they discuss their discography, Harry explains that their early hits sound very different when performed live compared to how they sound on the record. He admits that some of their earlier songs can make them cringe a bit now, but when performed in a live setting, they sound awesome. One of the things they pride themselves on is that even people who aren't fans of McFly can come to their shows and end up enjoying it. In fact, at the Isle of Wight Festival this year, their manager overheard Fiona Bruce in the crowd saying, "Oh my God, I didn't realize McFly were this good!"
You never know who might be in the audience, but regardless of their initial thoughts, Harry is confident that most people will leave their show thinking, "They're way better than I thought." It's something they've been able to continue doing for so long, even though they still sometimes have to deal with misconceptions about who they are as a band.
It can be frustrating at times for McFly to still be perceived as the same boisterous teenagers who burst onto the scene in baggy jeans and with an abundance of gel in their hair. But as Harry confesses, it's also a blessing in a way. They had their peak of success at a young age and released their music at the perfect time. However, it can also be limiting as people tend to only see them as the 17 and 18-year-olds who annoyed them back then. As they've gotten older, they've learned to accept the positives and not be too frustrated by it.
Despite the challenges they've faced, McFly still possesses a real passion for music. This summer, Harry is looking forward to balancing his life as a dad with being part of a pop-punk band as they gear up to headline Sandown Park Racecourse on August 8. He loves the challenge of performing in front of larger crowds, especially when there are people in the audience who aren't fans.
During their summer run, Harry will even be able to bring one or two of his children along, making it feel like he's dipping in and out of being in a band for a night. It's a nice break from dad life, but he still gets to go back home and be a dad for the rest of the week. It's a balance that he enjoys.
McFly has seen plenty of changes in the music industry since they first got their big break. Harry thinks their journey to fame was more "pure" than what most musicians experience now in 2021. They had to physically go out and do promotion without the help of social media, which can be overwhelming and stressful for many artists. Looking back, he's glad they didn't have to deal with that added pressure.
But even with the challenges they've faced, Harry is grateful that they were able to achieve success when they did, and not in the age of social media and streaming. As they celebrate 21 years together as a band, he reflects on how they never really thought about where they would be in 20 years. They were just a group of young, talented guys writing great songs and enjoying the journey together. That naive confidence and togetherness is still present in everything they do.
