The Power star Halle Bush was deeply moved while filming one of Allie’s opening moments when her foster father attempted to rape her. Allie is one of the many teenage girls who suddenly discover they have the power to electrocute others in the powerful adaptation of Naomi Alderman’s novel. Halle brings Allie to life, who discovers her new ability when Mr Montgomery tries to assault her while his wife is downstairs.
Halle spoke to The Agency about shooting this difficult scene, and said: ‘He was a little bit scared of my mom because she was watching me, but he made us all feel comfortable on set. Even when I knew him as a person, it was still so scary and uncomfortable.’ Despite the fear, Halle recognised the importance this scene has to many who have been through similar real-life experiences, and had to push her feelings aside. She continued: ‘I just thought, in my head, there are so many girls who went through situations like this, I can only imagine the pain and suffering that they’re going through, so it made me just want to tell our story even more and portray it as much as I can.’
Halle also related to Allie as a ‘young black girl’ who is used to being spoken down to, overlooked, and judged. She explained: ‘Already as a woman of colour, you have two targets on your back because you’re a woman and then you’re a woman of colour.’ Despite the horror of the scene, Halle was able to see the power of the story and the true importance of the moment.
