Halle Bailey is an inspiration to us all. Not only is she a talented actor and singer, she is also a beacon of light in times of darkness. Recently, Bailey extended her support to Rachel Zegler, the 22-year-old actress who will play Snow White in the upcoming live-action remake of the fairy tale. Unfortunately, since her casting was announced, Zegler has been the target of numerous racist attacks.
Zegler won a Golden Globe for her work as Maria in the 2021 West Side Story remake, yet that has not kept her safe from the relentless trolls who have expressed their disapproval of Disney’s decision to cast a Latinx actress in the role. In response to the on-set photos of Zegler that were published, she spoke out, prompting Bailey to show her support.
Bailey, who is now playing Ariel in Disney’s remake of The Little Mermaid, knows all too well the burden of racist discourse. After her own casting announcement, the #NotMyAriel trend persisted for weeks. Bailey leaned on the wisdom of Beyoncé to help her stay focussed on the moment and not read the comments.
“As a Black person, you just expect it, and it’s not really a shock anymore,” Bailey said. “When [Chlöe and I] first signed to Parkwood, [Beyoncé] was always like: ’I never read my comments. Don’t ever read the comments.’ Honestly, when the teaser came out, I was at the D23 Expo and I was so happy. I didn’t see any of the negativity.”
Halle Bailey is an exemplar of how to rise above hate and be a beacon of hope in difficult times. She is a true princess in every sense of the word and is an inspiration to us all. We love you, Halle!
