Two guests on Antiques Roadshow got the surprise of their lives when they discovered just how much their mum's ring was worth. They weren't too fussed about getting it valued, but decided to take a chance while there was no queue at one expert's table. Little did they know what was to come.
The guest who wore the ring on her little finger explained how it belonged to her mum. "We were helping her clean out her stuff and, in the sock drawer, we stumbled upon this ring that was wrapped up in a sock."
Joanna Hardy, the expert, was astonished. "No! I don't believe that!" she exclaimed. She added, "It could've gone in the washing machine, or to charity!"
The guest recalled the moment her mum revealed it was her ring. "I said, 'Mum, is this your ring?' and she said, 'Oh, yes. I kept it in there so I didn't lose it.'"
Describing the silver dazzler, Joanna said, "It is absolutely superb. Made in platinum, it's about 1915. The diamond is what we call a transitional cut, there's a really soft look about it, there's nothing sharp. It has such an air of sophistication."
What followed was news that truly stunned the pair. Joanna explained that the jewellery could be worth around £20,000. She added, "It is nearly a full carat, so it's a really large size." There was, however, a "really tiny flaw" on the side of the ring, which Joanna said was natural and not anyone's fault. She encouraged the women to get the claw fixed if they were looking to sell.
The two guests were speechless. Joanna commented, "It is such a stunning, stunning ring," and the owner joked, "We better get that claw fixed!"
It's incredible to think that such a valuable piece of jewellery was found wrapped in a sock. Antiques Roadshow airs every Sunday on BBC One and iPlayer, so why not have a look and see what hidden treasures you could find in your home?
