When I first started playing Red Dead Redemption 2, I wasn't sure what to expect. I had heard great things, but I wasn't sure if the game would live up to the hype. After playing it for a few months, I can honestly say that it was one of the best gaming experiences I've ever had.
The game captures the wild west with stunning realism and attention to detail. The wildlife, terrain, and atmosphere are all well crafted and provide an immersive experience. Playing on Steam Deck allowed me to play most nights, which I think is essential for getting the full experience out of the game. With 80.3% completion, I can safely say that this game ranks as one of the greatest ever made and is a strong argument for considering video games as art.
I used to think that GTA 5 was the best game ever, but after giving Red Dead Redemption 2 my full attention, I now wish that Rockstar would focus on making Red Dead Redemption 3 instead of GTA 6. I think there are a few things that GTA 6 can learn from Red Dead Redemption 2.
For starters, sometimes less is more. I think the game could have been a third shorter, as the main story is over 100 missions long and the epilogue could have been shorter as well. I'd like to see GTA 6 have a shorter 10-20 hour main campaign with the option to choose the side content.
Red Dead Redemption 2 also excels in terms of technical aspects. The graphics are some of the best I've seen and the world feels like it's truly alive. I love the chance encounters and random events that can happen, and I'm sure GTA 6 will have some of these too.
The core gameplay of Red Dead Redemption 2 is also really good. The Dead Eye targeting feature and the slow motion headshots are really satisfying and I think GTA 6 could benefit from implementing some of these features.
Finally, the best part of Red Dead Redemption 2 is the story and characters. Despite some of their immoral actions, you can't help but root for them. I got very attached to Arthur and found myself reloading my game to keep my honor. The deaths in the game were gut-wrenching and I think this might be the best written game I've ever played.
However, with GTA 5, I didn't really sympathize with any of the characters. I know that Red Dead Redemption 2 is more serious than GTA 5, but I think there should be a better balance between the serious and lighter moments.
Overall, I am sure that GTA 6 will be a success, but I think it can take some inspiration from Red Dead Redemption 2. With its stunning graphics, immersive atmosphere, and likable characters, Red Dead Redemption 2 is one of the greatest games ever made.
