Grandfather praised for stopping stabbing during car accident.
A brave and selfless grandfather is being praised for his heroic actions during a chaotic car crash that turned into a frightening stabbing incident. Paul Sargeant, a 67-year-old man, was driving on the Princes Highway in Engadine, a suburb in Sydney's south, on August 25 when he witnessed a white Jaguar colliding with another car. Reacting quickly, Sargeant swerved to avoid the crash and then rushed to offer his assistance.

In an interview with 9News, Sargeant recalled the intense moments after the crash. "As I ran towards the scene, I noticed smoke coming from the dashboard of the Jaguar. I was worried that the car might catch fire," he said. "But what I heard next was something I've never heard before - screams of terror. At first, I thought I was just responding to a regular car accident. Little did I know, it was far from a normal situation."

The driver of the Jaguar, Antony Benson, had allegedly used a box cutter to stab his 43-year-old partner who was sitting in the passenger seat. After the attack, Benson got out of the car and started charging towards Sargeant. "We had managed to get the woman out of the car and onto the ground, but then he turned his aggression towards me," Sargeant explained. "Despite being injured during the struggle, I knew I had to protect the woman from him. So, I tackled him to the ground."

During the altercation, Sargeant sustained a deep 20cm gash on his abdomen, but that didn't stop him from shielding the woman from Benson's attacks. "He was yelling at her, blaming her for changing the radio station. We were trying to calm him down, and I even joked with him about how my wife does the same thing sometimes," Sargeant shared.

Once the police arrived, they were able to subdue Benson with a Taser and take him into custody. The woman was rushed to the hospital and was discharged last week. In a statement, her family expressed their gratitude towards the bystanders who intervened and helped during the incident. They also hoped for healing for everyone involved. Sargeant, however, doesn't see himself as a hero. "I just did what I thought anyone would do in that situation," he humbly stated.

As the investigation continues, authorities are reviewing the footage of the incident. Benson is expected to appear in court next month to face the consequences of his alleged actions. The community is thankful for Sargeant's bravery and selflessness, and his story serves as a reminder that there are still good people out there who are willing to step up and do the right thing in times of crisis.
