Government is planning to reconsider the order that had stopped conversion of agriculture land for commercial purposes. An order was issued by the Indian Metrological and Survey department stating that the agriculture land in Kodagu should not be converted for commercial intentions. Recently, state revenue minister R V Deshpande presiding over the cabinet sub-committee meeting discussed regarding the same. Kodagu had witnessed nature's fury in the month of August. The district had witnessed heavy rains, landslides and water blasts. Along with many houses, public roads were also damaged and had caused pain to the people. The government had ordered the meteorological department to submit a detailed report the reasons for nature's fury. And the department had reported that most of the damages occurred due to man's meddling with nature. Considering the report, the government had issued an order which deprived the people of Kodagu from converting agriculture lands for commercial purposes, because of which the residents of Kodagu were finding it difficult to even construct houses on their lands. Applications regarding the same were not considered at the grama panchayat, town corporation and town panchayat levels too. People were asked for an attestation from the metro logical department. Fed-up with the recent developments, the residents had filed complaint directly with the chief minister and the revenue minister.
Keeping in mind these complaints, the issue was discussed during the cabinet committee meeting and the revenue minister during the cabinet sub-committee meeting advised to take necessary actions. Based on which, recently in the presence of the revenue minister, related department's secretary and officers a conference was held to discuss the matters regarding the matter. Also, revenue departmen's land granting secretary C Vimalamma urged the DC to submit a detailed report in three days regarding pros and cons, if the conversion is allowed.
Deputy Commissioner P I Sri Vidya had gone on leave during the process and the in charge officers could not submit accurate details in stipulated time. Now, the new DC Anees Kanmani Joy is looking into the matter. Responding to 'Shakthi' she said a detailed report will be submitted as early as possible. She has just studied the files after procuring all the details, she said.
