An expert has suggested that some government officials fear UFOs are caused by ‘demonic forces’. According to the UK’s leading UFO expert Nick Pope, who ran the Ministry of Defence’s UFO desk between 1991 and 1994, this belief was a factor in why the government failed to conduct proper investigations into unidentified anomalous phenomena in the 1990s.
Mr Pope explained to The Agency that the notion of UFOs being linked to demonic forces is one that has been explored by UFO enthusiasts for some time, however it has not been openly acknowledged at government level. He believes this superstitious thinking is hampering adequate research into the issue.
A case in point is the former Chief of the Defence Staff Lord Hill-Norton, who Mr Pope briefed on several occasions, and who fell increasingly under the influence of a maverick priest, Paul Inglesby. Reverend Inglesby was an ex-military man who had a severe illness during his service which left him with extreme hallucinations. He believed that UFOs were demonic forces and preached this to Lord Hill-Norton and other high-profile public figures, including the then Earl Mountbatten.
Mr Pope believes this religious interpretation of UAPs was an unwelcome distraction and something he worked hard to counter. He also suspects that similar extreme religious views are informing the scepticism and pushback on UAPs from the British government.
The Rendlesham Forest incident of 1980 is a prime example of a UK UAP sighting that has never been solved. It is often referred to as ‘Britain’s Roswell’. Over three days, military personnel and police witnessed lights, scorch marks and an alleged ‘craft of unknown origin’ in the forest around the military bases of Bentwaters and Woodbridge in Suffolk.
