Gov't approves an extra 75 lakh LPG connections under PM Ujjwala scheme to increase access to clean cooking fuel.
The Union Cabinet, headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in its weekly meeting on Wednesday, approved a proposal to provide an additional 75 lakh LPG connections to women under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana. The move, which will be implemented in the next three years, will come with a financial implication of Rs 1650 crore, as reported by Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur at a press conference.

As per the existing modalities of Ujjawala 2.0, the first refill and stove will be provided free of cost to the beneficiaries. A fortnight ago, the Union Cabinet also decided to cut the prices of LPG cylinders by Rs 200 as a relief measure to citizens. The decision in Delhi brought down the cost of a 14.2 kg cylinder from Rs 1,103 to Rs 903. In addition to this, the scheme also provides an existing targeted subsidy of Rs 200 per cylinder to Ujjwala households, which will continue. This means that the effective price in Delhi for Ujjwala beneficiaries after this reduction will be Rs 703 per cylinder.

The move will benefit more than 31 crore domestic LPG consumers, including 9.6 crore Ujjwala beneficiaries. In addition to this, the government has also decided to exempt LPG imports from Agri Cess and cut the commercial LPG price by Rs 158. This will bring about a major relief to the people, especially during the current crisis.
