The Maharashtra government has taken the initiative to ensure justice is served by setting up a four-member committee to investigate the escape of Lalit Patil, an accused in a drug case, from the Sassoon General Hospital.
The committee will be headed by Dr Dilip Mhaisekar, director of the Directorate of Medical Education and Research. It will also include Dr Sudhir Deshmukh, dean of the Government Medical College in Solapur; Dr Hemant Godbole, professor of Government Medical College in Nanded, and Dr Eknath Pawar, professor of Grant Medical College, Mumbai.
The escape of Lalit Patil came to light when the city police arrested a man from outside the government-run Sassoon Hospital with mephedrone worth Rs 2 crore. This led to the arrest of a hospital canteen staffer who revealed that the contraband was supplied by Lalit Patil, an inmate in the Yerwada Jail who was admitted in the hospital at the time.
The investigation revealed that Patil was running his drug racket from the hospital. On October 2, he escaped from the hospital while being taken for X-ray imaging, leading to the suspension of nine police personnel.
On Tuesday, Pune police arrested Lalit Patil's brother Bhushan Patil and his aide Abhishek Balkawade from the Nepal border in Uttar Pradesh in the mephedrone seizure case. The Maharashtra government's investigation committee will now take charge to ensure that justice is served and the guilty are punished.
