Good demand for plantains in Mysore

Chamarajanagar  :  Farmers in district increased  growing Chandra variety plantain as it getting good demand in super markets of the cities. Farmers in Honnuru , Kesturu , Yelanduru in Yelandur taluk  growing this variety in large numbers.



This variety has rich fiber along with vitamin C and  B6.  The farmers  normally growing  Yalakki , Pacha  , Nendra  and Madaranga , but Chandra variety has less disease menace.

Speaking  to this  reporter on  Wednesday  , Kestur farmer Basavanneppa told that he growing  Chandra variety in his three acres field. This variety has less disease compared to other varieties. He said plantain cultivation requires less man power and minimal maintenance. He said  he getting good income  by cultivation of this variety and consumers who know the specialty would come to fields and buys it directly. He said plantain has demand through out the year. he send the plantain to Mysore market, and traders supplies to supermarkets as they have contract with them.

When contacted  Yelandur taluk horticulture assistant director B S Raju said that  Chandra plantain has rich fiber with medicinal  contents. Farmers in Kalburgi district grows this variety  in large numbers.    He said this variety has  11 minerals with 6 vitamin content supplements. People believes that this variety  cures kidney stones, and its potassium and  carbohydrates  increases beauty. He said people applies this variety with oats and honey to improve face beauty.

He said earlier farmers growing more than 15 varieties in district , now growing only 5-6 varieties.
