Neil the baby actor Oscar Hartland, has big ideas for his Gavin and Stacey character. As one of three babies who played Neil in the original three series of the BBC sitcom and the one chosen to return for the much-loved Christmas reunion, Oscar is ready to jump back in with both feet if the writers decide to follow up the reunion.
When asked about the possibility of returning to the show, Oscar says, “I think it would be cool. If they wanted me to do it I would do it.” Oscar is already imagining what Neil would be like as a teenager and has some creative ideas to share. “Neil should have a dark turn. The audition went well and all the judges but Will.i.am turned their chairs for Oscar. He chose Danny Jones as his mentor, revealing, “It was always Danny since the start. He’s who I wanted. Although Ronan gave a good pitch, I couldn’t be swayed.” When asked why he chose rock music, Oscar said, “It’s for everyone, all ages. You can be more creative than with pop music.”
The Voice Kids is ongoing, and Oscar can’t wait to watch the Gavin and Stacey reunion back. While he admits he doesn’t like the way he looks in the episode, he has fond memories of his time on set. “Me and Rob Brydon would spend hours playing Scrabble together. I would actually quite like to watch that back – he’s so funny.” Oscar also credits the experience with teaching him a lot about acting. “I learnt more about acting in two weeks than some people learn in years. Ruth taught me how to channel my energy in performances, which I get to use in music too.”
Whether or not a follow up Gavin and Stacey reunion occurs, one thing is for sure: Oscar Hartland is an incredibly talented actor and musician with a bright future ahead of him.
