Gary Neville has criticised Liverpool's response to the VAR mistake made during their defeat to Tottenham on Saturday, saying that the tone of their statement was ‘dangerous’.
The Merseysiders felt they had taken the lead after Luis Diaz had raced clear and finished emphatically, only for the linesman's flag to be raised. After a brief VAR check, the game restarted with a free-kick to Spurs. It later transpired that the VAR team thought the on-field decision had been a goal.
Despite receiving an apology from PGMOL after the match, Liverpool released a statement on Sunday evening demanding ‘escalation and resolution’, and saying they would be ‘exploring a range of options’.
Former Manchester United defender Neville believes that the wording of the statement was 'vague and aggressive', and that the apology given should be sufficient. He wrote on social media platform X:
‘Jurgen Klopp handled the situation well last night after the game. Most football fans will have had empathy with what happened and recognised it was wrong! However, Liverpool’s statement tonight is a mistake. Talk of exploring all options and sporting integrity are dangerous phrases along with being vague and aggressive. Sorry we f***ed up was enough!’
Neville also retweeted several posts criticising both Liverpool’s statement and the application of VAR, while dismissing a suggestion from a Liverpool fan that there needed to be repercussions. He said: ‘What would that look like mate? It’s a f*** up. We’ve all done it.’
