Future wars will be largely influenced by AI and robotics, says CDS Anil Chauhan.
In New Delhi, Chief of Defence Staff Gen Anil Chauhan expressed the significance of Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and robotics in shaping future wars. He highlighted the need for strategic leaders to have quick decision-making skills in the technology-driven battlespace. This was mentioned during the culmination of the first-ever tri-services 'Future Warfare' course.

Gen Chauhan emphasized the importance of understanding changing geopolitics and utilizing advanced technologies like Artificial Intelligence and hypersonic capabilities to revolutionize warfare tactics. The course was designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of the various domains in which future wars will be fought, such as cyber, space, and the electromagnetic spectrum.

The CDS stressed the urgency for future leaders to be well-equipped to make swift decisions in the rapidly shrinking timelines of modern battles. He also stated that Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, advancements in Stealth Technology, Hypersonics, and Robotics will play a crucial role in determining the nature of future wars.

In today's dynamic security environment, the proliferation of niche technologies and the evolving nature of warfare, Gen Chauhan believes that it is necessary to prepare future leaders who can comprehend the complexities of modern warfare. The course focused on key areas such as future warfare trends, air and space operations, non-kinetic warfare, maritime operations, and multi-domain operations. It aimed to equip participants with integrated operational concepts, enhanced joint force capabilities, and advanced technologies for future battlefields, thereby strengthening tri-service cooperation.

According to a Defence Ministry official, the course was personally driven by Gen Anil Chauhan, and it was open to all ranks, ranging from 13 to 30 years of service. The objective of the Future Warfare course is to create a cadre of tech-enabled military commanders who are capable of handling the complexities of the modern battlespace.

Gen Anil Chauhan, along with the Vice Chiefs of the three services, were briefed on the outcomes of the course, and discussions were held on the future courses' framework. The Defence Ministry stated that the Future Warfare course was rank-neutral and aimed to develop a cadre of leaders who can lead and shape the future of warfare, ensuring a unified and effective response to emerging challenges.
