Monday morning brought tragedy to Louisiana Tech University when a student stabbed another student and three others. Jacoby Johnson, a 23 year-old student, was arrested behind a baseball field shortly after the attack on the victims as they left the Lambright Sports and Wellness Center.
Chief Randal Hermes of the Tech Police reported to the Ruston Daily Reader that Johnson "ran up behind them and surprised them." Of the four victims, one was a graduate student who was airlifted to Shreveport and two others were rushed to a nearby hospital. The graduate student was in critical condition and the two others were in stable condition. The fourth victim refused medical treatment and Johnson himself was transported to Northern Louisiana Medical Center with undisclosed injuries.
The university was closed briefly and reopened at 1pm. The Tech Police investigated the incident with assistance from the Ruston Police Department and the Lincoln Parish Sheriff’s Office. Johnson has since been charged with four counts of attempted second-degree murder and booked into the Lincoln Parish Detention Center.
Louisiana Tech President Les Guice expressed his condolences to those affected by the incident. He stated, "Our hearts go out to those impacted most directly, and our immediate focus is on those affected by today’s violence." He acknowledged the shock and worry that may linger on campus and in the community.
The campus in Ruston is located about 70 miles east of Shreveport. This incident occurred less than two weeks after multiple students were stabbed at Van Nuys High School in Los Angeles, prompting the campus to be placed on lockdown.
