Former Lakers players and coaches react to HBO's cancellation of a documentary about Kobe and Shaq's time with the team.
Byron Scott, a former Los Angeles Lakers player and part of the team's three NBA championships, isn't too broken up about the cancellation of HBO's Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty. Although his storyline was planned for the upcoming season, Scott never watched the show anyway.

When asked about the show's cancellation, Scott simply said, "Nah, I'm good." He went on to explain, "I wasn't a big fan of the show because I know a lot of it was fabricated in certain ways just to make it more interesting for the fans, which is cool, that's TV. That's Hollywood. That's what they do."

Scott also shared that he and his former teammates, Earvin “Magic” Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, have never discussed the show as friends and former teammates. He said, "I haven't talked to Magic about it, didn't talk to Kareem about it. When we're together, we never even talk about it. If it makes the convo, it's because the wives would bring it up."

Johnson had spoken out against the show's portrayal of the Showtime Lakers, and he said that other players shared his sentiments. He said, “You can’t do a story about the Lakers without the Lakers. The real Lakers. You gotta have the guys.” He added, “So I don’t know what this stuff is, I haven’t watched it, I’m not gonna watch it. And all the guys said the same thing. Kareem, everybody. You can’t do it.”

The show's cancellation has been met with mixed reactions from the former Lakers greats. But fans of the series are disappointed that it ended prematurely in the streaming era.
