Louis Emerick Grant, the former Coronation Street cast member, has narrowly avoided jail time after he pleaded guilty to careless driving that resulted in serious injuries for two young girls.
Grant was widely known for his role as Mike Thornberry in 2018, Steve and Andy McDonald's former teacher. On October 2 of last year, two 12-year-old girls were crossing a road in Wallasey, Wirral, when Grant's Honda cut the corner of the right-hand bend and collided with them.
The accident left one of the girls with a fractured leg, while the other suffered a fractured leg and ankle, a broken jaw, a broken nose, and smashed teeth. They both stayed in Alder Hey hospital for a period of time, and will still require further surgery and have missed a considerable amount of school days.
Grant claims he did not see the girls because of the sun shining directly into his car, and his prescription glasses reacted to the light. He apologized for the accident and was found to be fully cooperative and remorseful throughout the investigation. When breathalysed at the scene, no evidence of alcohol or drugs were found in his system, nor was he using his mobile phone while driving.
District Crown Prosecutor Linda Melia of the CPS Mersey Cheshire commented on the incident, saying: “This was an extremely distressing incident and the two girls suffered serious injuries as a result of what happened on that day. It’s clear Mr Grant did not mean to injure these girls, but the events of that day are a lesson that, when we are at the wheel of a car, care and attention are needed at all times.”
Grant's careless driving serves as a warning to all drivers to remain alert and cautious when on the road. Even if a driver is careful and attentive, accidents can still happen, so it is important to remain mindful and aware of your surroundings while driving.
