Find out what IMD predicts for March weather; India expected to have...
Hello everyone, I hope you are all doing well. As the month of March approaches, the India Meteorological Department has announced that we can expect warmer than usual temperatures and an increase in heat wave days. This marks the beginning of summer across the country.

At a virtual press conference, senior weather scientist D Sivandanda Pai shared that March is expected to have above normal maximum temperatures over most parts of India, except for some southern regions of the country. However, he also mentioned that below normal maximum temperatures are likely in the southern peninsular region.

This prediction comes after February was recorded as the warmest month since 1901, with a mean temperature of 22.04 degrees Celsius. This was 1.34 degrees higher than the normal temperature of 20.70 degrees. When asked about the impact of this warm weather on the rabi crop, Pai reassured that nearly 60% of the wheat grown in the country is a heat resistant variety, according to experts from the Agriculture ministry.

In terms of rainfall, Pai shared that February had a recorded average of 10.9 mm, which is the 18th lowest since 1901 and the fifth lowest since 2001. He also noted that the rainfall over South peninsular India was only 1.2 mm, which is the 10th lowest since 1901 and the fourth lowest since 2001.

Moving on to the upcoming hot weather season, Pai stated that above-normal maximum temperatures are expected over most parts of the country, except for some southern regions and isolated pockets of Northeast India where normal to below-normal temperatures are likely. Additionally, during the months of March to May in 2025, we can expect an above-normal number of heatwave days across most parts of the country, with the exception of northeast India, extreme north India, and some southwestern and southern regions of Peninsular India.

However, the IMD has predicted that the overall rainfall during March 2025 will be normal for the country as a whole. Pai also mentioned that the current wet spell experienced in northern parts of the country is due to an intense Western Disturbance, bringing snowfall and rains to Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand. This wet spell is expected to continue until March 3rd and possibly beyond, as another Western Disturbance is predicted to cross the region next week.

In terms of rainfall, Pai shared that northern India is expected to receive normal rainfall for the month of March, with an average of 29.9 mm based on data from 1971-2020. Overall, the country as a whole is expected to receive normal rainfall during this period.

Thank you for tuning in to this weather update from the India Meteorological Department. Stay safe and stay prepared for the upcoming hot weather season. Take care!
