As a 46 year old gamer, I have always been about the games rather than the system or platform. I enjoy playing games on multiple systems to experience all the games that I want to. But what I find difficult to understand about modern gaming is the tribalism that has emerged in the gaming community. People will pick a plastic box to represent and go to war to defend the honour of their selected plastic box or preferred device for gaming.
The recent Microsoft/Activision Blizzard deal really triggered some intense feelings in the gaming community. People were debating topics that were beyond their knowledge, and I saw some ridiculous arguments online about this that made absolutely zero sense at all. At the end of the day, all these companies want is our cash; nothing more, nothing less.
The thing I find most entertaining about this whole console warfare is the content creators on various social media platforms just roasting each other extensively. It’s a limitless supply of entertainment, especially when they get angry and are clearly seething and spitting venom. But my inner voice is saying, ‘If you truly hate this product, game or console, why are you giving it attention?’
I just wish gamers were as passionate about more important issues in the industry, such as games coming out unfinished. That is not a good practice, and we should all agree on that. I’m gonna carry on as I always have, enjoying playing games on whatever console I want to play them on. Companies like Sony and Microsoft should cut down on the money they’re spending for advertising and just let us do it for them. All they need to do is tell us what games are coming out, drop the odd video, and let the folks in the console war trenches do the rest.
