According to reports, Oasis has officially announced their support acts for their highly anticipated reunion tour in the UK and Ireland next year. The lucky performers are none other than former frontman of The Verve and solo artist, Richard Ashcroft, and indie rock band, Cast.
There has been much speculation about which indie legends would join Oasis on stage after their 15-year absence, and it seems that these two talented acts have secured the coveted spots. Cast and Richard have been booked for all of Oasis' UK and Ireland shows, putting an end to the rumors about other potential support acts, such as Blossoms.
It's no surprise that Richard Ashcroft was chosen as a support act, as he has been a longtime friend of both Liam and Noel Gallagher. In fact, Oasis even supported The Verve, known then as simply Verve, back in 1993. Cast, on the other hand, were major players in the Britpop movement alongside Oasis and Blur, and they even shared the stage with the Gallagher brothers during their iconic Knebworth Park shows in 1996.
For those unfamiliar with these talented bands, The Verve was formed in Wigan in 1989 by Richard Ashcroft, guitarist Nick McCabe, bassist Simon Jones, and drummer Peter Sailsbury. Their biggest hits include "Bittersweet Symphony" and "The Drugs Don't Work." Cast, on the other hand, was formed in Liverpool in 1992 by John Power and Peter Wilkinson after Power left The La's, who were responsible for the hit track "There She Goes." Their best-known songs include "Alright," "Finetime," and "Sandstorm."
It is reported that Cast will be the opening act, followed by Richard Ashcroft, and then Oasis, according to sources from The Independent. An official announcement is expected to be made next week, but Liam Gallagher couldn't resist teasing the news on social media. He wrote, "Just spoke to the CHEF here it is OASIS RICHARD ASHCROFT CAST you are welcome see you nxt year." And added, "we never set sail without the 1 and only RICARDO he's our boy from day DOT come aboard Rkid." For those who may not know, Chef is Noel Gallagher's nickname.
While Liam's posts on social media are not always reliable, this time, sources have backed up his claims. In fact, Noel Gallagher wrote the song "Cast No Shadow" from Oasis' second album, "Morning Glory?" as a tribute to Richard Ashcroft. The lyrics include, "Bound with all the weight of all the words he tried to say / Chained to all the places that he never wished to stay / Bound with all the weight of all the words he tried to say / As he faced the sun he cast no shadow." In an interview with Select magazine, Noel explained that Richard always seemed to be unhappy with his surroundings and was always trying too hard.
But the bond between Oasis and The Verve goes way back. Richard once joked, "I can't work out if [Noel] means I'm a witch, vampire, or just incredibly emaciated and thin because, you know, I haven't really got enough body mass to cast a shadow?" Noel has also called Richard a "genius" on Radio 1 and expressed that circumstances worked against The Verve.
He went on to say, "That man is a genius, and I tell you what, he ain't doing it for himself, he's doing it for me. He has got to be a better songwriter than me, and in return, I've got to write better songs than him. That's what it's about. People are going to build up this thing about The Verve and Oasis, but we go back SO far, from Manchester and Wigan, that they will never be able to touch the bond and the friendship that we have."
