Tragedy struck off the coast of North Goa on Wednesday when a tourist boat capsized in the Arabian Sea. The incident, which happened around 1:30 pm, resulted in the death of one person while 20 others were rescued by authorities.
According to a senior police official, the boat had a total of 21 passengers on board, including children as young as six years old and women. Sadly, a 54-year-old man lost his life in the accident. However, thanks to the quick response of the authorities, the remaining passengers were brought to safety and taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Thankfully, most of the passengers were wearing life jackets, except for two who unfortunately did not have them on. The boat, which was carrying a family of 13 from Maharashtra, capsized about 60 meters away from the coastline, causing all of the passengers to fall into the sea.
The incident was immediately reported to Drishti Marine, a government-appointed lifesaving agency, who quickly sprang into action. A spokesman for the agency explained that a personnel from their team who was on duty at the time noticed the boat capsizing and immediately called for backup. In total, 18 lifesavers rushed to the scene and successfully brought all the struggling passengers to shore.
The injured passengers were given first aid on the beach and those in critical condition were rushed to a nearby medical facility in an ambulance. Out of the 20 passengers, four were found to be in critical condition, including two children aged six and seven, and two women aged 25 and 55. They were immediately revived and hospitalized for further treatment.
This unfortunate incident took place in the midst of the bustling tourist season in Goa, especially during the Christmas and New Year celebrations. It serves as a reminder of the importance of safety measures, especially when it comes to water activities.
Just a week ago, a similar tragedy occurred off the coast of Mumbai when a Navy craft lost control and crashed into a passenger ferry, resulting in the death of 15 people. The ferry, which was carrying more than 100 passengers to the popular tourist attraction of Elephanta Island, was struck by the speeding Navy craft during engine trials.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families of the victims and we hope that such incidents can be prevented in the future to ensure the safety of all those who visit our beautiful coastal destinations.
