Anastacia, the talented and resilient singer known for hits like "I'm Outta Love," has recently opened up about her experience with menopause. In an interview on the White Wine Question Time podcast, the 55-year-old shared that she initially thought she had a brain tumor due to the intense symptoms she was experiencing.
Anastacia has been vocal about her health struggles in the past, having undergone a double mastectomy after being diagnosed with breast cancer. But even with her past battles, she was taken by surprise when her exhaustion and brain fog turned out to be caused by hormonal changes.
"I didn't even realize I was going through such hell that it was caused by menopause," she explained to host Kate Thornton. "I didn't know my exhaustion; I didn't know my brain fog. I didn't know all the things – I just thought I was tired."
The singer shared that she had been self-diagnosing and was convinced that she had a brain tumor. It wasn't until she got checked out by a doctor that she learned her symptoms were actually related to menopause. "My ball was, I thought I had a brain tumor and life was going horrible, and I was really, really scared," she recalled.
It wasn't until she went to a specialist in Switzerland that she learned the truth. "This guy in Switzerland was like, I think you're going through some hormone stuff," she said. "I told him, 'It doesn't feel anything like that, I have hot flashes and I'm okay with that.'"
Anastacia shared that she had no clue her symptoms were stemming from her hormones, as they were not commonly known as signs of menopause. The Mayo Clinic states that women can experience menopause in their 40s and 50s, with the average age in the US being 51. Symptoms can include irregular periods, hot flashes, chills, sleep problems, and weight gain.
The singer has had a tough time in the spotlight, having battled cancer twice and also being diagnosed with Crohn's disease as a teenager. But through it all, she has used her platform to spread awareness for breast cancer and other health issues.
Speaking to The Agency, Anastacia shared that she is now "probably more famous" for her health issues than her music career. But she doesn't mind, as long as she can use her experiences to help others. "I get fans appreciating my honesty and candor," she said. "If my honesty helped another person, I'd do it again and again."
