Feeling tight and dry after cleaning your skin in the morning? It's a common issue, but you don't have to put up with it.

Dr Justine Hextall, consultant dermatologist for La Roche Posay, explains that the cause of dryness and tightness may come from a few factors. It could be that your skin is naturally drier, but the cleanser you're using could also be too harsh.

"If your skin feels dry after washing your face it usually means the cleanser is too harsh, stripping the skin barrier and ultimately leading to moisture loss," says Dr Justine. She adds that your skin should feel soft and hydrated after washing, not tight and in need of moisturizing.

Another factor could be the water you're using. Dr Justine explains that hard water contains minerals like calcium and magnesium which can irritate the skin and disrupt the skin barrier. This can lead to dryness, sensitivity, and irritation.

Finally, the way you're washing your skin makes a difference. If you're washing your face in the shower, the water temperature may be too hot and strip away moisture. To avoid this, Dr Justine recommends washing your face after the shower.

So what types of cleanser can you use on dry skin? Dr Justine suggests La Roche Posay Toleriane Gel Double Cleanse, or CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser. Both are designed to nourish your skin while cleaning it.
