Tech neck is real - there's no denying it. Have you ever caught yourself in the mirror while sitting at your desk and realised you look like a prawn? Or, when someone takes a video of you in a group setting, do you see yourself with your neck bent forward, looking at your phone? If you can’t sit up straight without a back rest, we’ve got you covered.
The first step to fixing your posture is understanding what ‘bad’ posture actually is. According to Helen O’Leary, physiotherapist and clinical director at Complete Pilates, there are lots of different types of posture and a huge spectrum of normal. She says that ‘bad’ posture is often slouching forwards with rounded shoulders and a more forward head, which is usually caused by spending long periods in the same position. Additionally, obesity, wearing high heels, being pregnant, or being in pain can all contribute to poor posture.
So, how can we fix it? Movement! Regular movement is key. Helen suggests taking short and sweet breaks throughout the day to keep your posture in check. To get you started, here are four exercises you can do to reset your posture: seated twist, seated hamstring stretch, dart, and superman. Do all of them at once for a five-minute reset or sprinkle them in throughout your day to get in extra movement. Don’t forget to take deep breaths!
