Former NFL running back Warrick Dunn had a special surprise in store for a single mother and her daughter in his hometown of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. With the help of his charity, Warrick Dunn Charities, and partners Habitat for Humanity and Catholic High School, he was able to build a house for Dominique and Miracle.
The New Orleans native credits his former high school with raising almost $100,000 to cover the costs of the project. Current students at Catholic High School also lent a hand to get their volunteer hours by helping with the construction.
In an interview with WAFB, Dunn expressed his passion for creating stability for families and changing the community and environment. “I think it’s important to help change the community and the environment, create stability for a family that could potentially have good long-term positive impacts,” he said.
Warrick Dunn Charities has so far built 218 homes for single parents all across America. Not only do they help with the down payments, but they also provide furniture, decoration, and even food for the pantry to help ease the stress of the move.
The charity is Dunn’s way of honoring his late mother’s dream of owning a home before she passed away. When Dunn was drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 1997, he decided to turn his grown net worth into a philanthropic endeavor to help other single parents achieve the same dream.
The charity has since expanded to include several other financial stability, health and wellness, and literacy-based programs, and have given over $1 million in down payment assistance. Nearly 100% of the families they’ve helped have been able to remain in their new homes without issue.
