Scottish actor Ewan McGregor has announced his plans to auction off 150 bottles of his personal whisky collection from Lochranza Distillery for a charitable cause. The rare 26 year old Arran Single Malt, which was aged in an ex-Sherry Hogshead cask, is one of the oldest whiskies ever produced by the distillery.
McGregor has a special connection with this particular whisky, as he was the first person to toast the inaugural cask of the malt back in 1998. This was also the first legal cask to be laid down on Arran in over 150 years. As a token of appreciation, the distillery presented McGregor with his own cask that day, which has been maturing in their warehouse ever since.
The bottles of Ewan's Cut are bottled at 46% ABV and feature a unique label design. The first 24 bottles have even been personally signed by the Trainspotting actor himself. The design and name of the bottle pay homage to McGregor's successful acting career, with references to his iconic roles in films such as Trainspotting and Star Wars, as well as his adventurous journey in Long Way Round.
Interestingly, each of the 150 bottle labels reads like a mini film script, making each one unique and special. These limited-edition bottles will be auctioned off by Whisky Auctioneer from 27 September to 7 October, with all proceeds going to Children's Hospices Across Scotland (CHAS). This charity is dedicated to providing support and care to children with life-limiting conditions and their families.
McGregor has been a longtime supporter of CHAS and has visited their hospices numerous times. He acknowledges the incredible care and support that Rachel House and Robin House offer to children and their families during their most difficult times. The actor hopes that this auction will raise a significant amount for the charity and help ensure that these incredible places can continue their important work.
Stewart Bowman, the Distillery Manager, expressed his excitement at having McGregor back at the distillery, where their story began almost 30 years ago. He also highlighted their commitment to giving back to the community, which aligns with McGregor's values. The distillery has taken care of Ewan's cask for the past 26 years and is delighted to collaborate with him, Whisky Auctioneer, and Leith to raise funds for CHAS.
