Altay Bayindir is yet to make his debut for Manchester United, but manager Erik ten Hag has revealed why he was absent in the Carabao Cup. The Turkish goalkeeper joined United from Fenerbahce in the summer in a deal worth around £4.3 million.
Bayindir was brought in to provide competition for fellow new summer signing Andre Onana. Onana started in goal for United’s 3-0 win over Crystal Palace in the Carabao Cup last week, leading to some surprise. But Ten Hag soon explained the decision, saying, “You will see. We chose to play Andre because they are both new and have to adapt to the English standard. It was important for him to use every game at this moment. We have to progress Altay, that’s clear. He’s making a very good impression in training and developing well. We are convinced we have the two right goalkeepers in our squad to do the job for us.”
United progressed to the Carabao Cup fourth round and will face Newcastle United in a repeat of last year’s final. They suffered a 1-0 home defeat to Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Saturday, and will look to bounce back when they host Turkish side Galatasaray in their second Champions League group stage fixture on Tuesday.
