It's not as far away as you think! While we all prepare for the upcoming heatwave, the UK soaps are already hard at work planning their Christmas storylines. Emmerdale is already teasing details of one of their stories - and it won't come as a huge surprise for any decent math and biology fan.
This week, Dawn Fletcher discovers that she is 16 weeks pregnant. With that, it's no coincidence that a December baby is on the way, as it's a common trope to feature a Christmas birth in soaps. Olivia, who plays Dawn, is enthusiastic about the storyline, as she says, "It's a really nice change of dynamic for Dawn. As an actor, it's going to be quite interesting because I haven't had a baby so that's going to be quite a challenge really to do all the things that are involved. I think it will be a meaty storyline. There are a lot of twists and turns, it will be good for us as actors to play that dynamic."
However, the news doesn't go down well with young Clemmie, who is scared that she will be displaced due to the disruptive start to her young life. Jay Kontzle, who plays dad-to-be Billy, explains how Clemmie reacts to the news: "Clemmie's very shocked. Lucas obviously is a little bit more ecstatic about the idea and Clemmie is not. Previous to finding out, she's already in a bad place because the thoughts going through her head is that she misses her mother, and reminiscing on what she'd been through and the good times that she had. The fact that she could potentially lose another mum, that's how she responds to it, it's the shock of, 'oh you're having a baby well, maybe I'm going to be ushered out here and I'm gonna lose another mother.'"
The news is revealed prematurely to the kids thanks to a ranting Gabby Thomas, leaving the parents furious, and a watching Kim Tate stunned. To make matters worse, Clemmie ends up going missing afterwards, leaving Billy and Dawn overwhelmed with guilt. Jay explains, "It's one thing after another, it's hard to keep up. Billy and Dawn are broken by her going missing, it's the self guilt. They think it's the way they've explained it and put it across and taken it for granted that she would be ok. The anxiety is going to be through the roof, the repercussions, how will she respond when you get her back, will she ever come back?"
So will it be a happy Christmas or will the family tensions remain? We'll have to wait until after the heatwave to find out.
