Emily Atack recently had an emotional journey in the upcoming episode of BBC's Who Do You Think You Are?. With the help of the show's experts, she delved into her past and made a heartbreaking discovery.
Emily found out that her great-great-grandfather Joseph Atack had taken his own life in 1886 at the age of 33, the same age Emily is today. Before his death, Joseph was in charge of miners' safety at South Yorkshire's Nostell Colliery. During an investigation, it was concluded that the death of a 36-year-old miner had been an 'accidental killing', as the miner had put his own life at risk by purposely jumping on the machinery.
Hearing about the events leading up to her ancestor's death, Emily was overwhelmed with emotion. She said, "Oh, my God. That is horrifically sad." She then revealed that her dad's side of the family is 'sensitive', and added, "If you gave a signal and it cost someone their life, you would never get over something like that."
In addition, Emily has been very open in the past about her own struggles with mental health. She told OK! Magazine in 2019, "I definitely have days where I struggle to get out of bed. Doesn't everyone?" She went on to explain how she used medication to get her through a difficult time, but is now in a much stronger place after attending therapy.
The episode also showed Emily visiting a church, which was the same place where Joseph's burial had taken place. She said, "There's no place I could feel more connected to."
Emily Atack's Who Do You Think You Are? episode is set to air Thursday on BBC1 at 9pm. Be sure to check it out!
