Bhubaneswar: In order to cater to the needs of passengers during the summer season, the East Coast Railway has announced the provision of economy meals at nine important stations under its jurisdiction. This new initiative, introduced by the ECoR on Thursday, aims to offer affordable and hygienic meals to passengers at Khurda Road, Sambalpur, Titilagarh, Balangir, Kantabanji, Palasa, Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram, and Srikakulam Railway Stations.

To make it convenient for passengers, these meal counters have been strategically placed near general second-class coaches on the platforms. This service is already operational at over 100 stations and has a total of 150 counters across all Indian Railways. The Indian Railways, in collaboration with the Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation, has taken this step to meet the needs of passengers, especially those traveling in unreserved coaches, during the busy summer months.

The new program recognizes the difficulties faced by passengers in unreserved compartments, who may not always have access to budget-friendly meal options. By offering readily available, affordable meals and snacks, this initiative aims to make the journey more comfortable for passengers, especially those traveling in general-class coaches. These meals are reasonably priced at Rs. 20, making them a pocket-friendly and satisfying option for passengers on the go. For those seeking a lighter snack, there are also options available at Rs. 50.

Passengers can now purchase their refreshments directly from these counters, eliminating the need to search for vendors or step outside the station. This service was successfully piloted at 51 stations last year and has now been expanded to over 100 stations and 150 counters in total. The Indian Railways plans to further expand this program and include even more stations in the near future, ensuring that passengers have access to affordable and hygienic meals throughout their journey.
