Lord Julian Fellowes, the acclaimed creator of Downton Abbey and The Gilded Age, recently shared some personal news in a new interview. At 75 years old, the Conservative peer has been using a wheelchair due to the return of a debilitating medical condition.
Despite his health challenges, Lord Julian has had a successful career in the entertainment industry since the 1970s, winning numerous awards for his work in television and stage productions. However, he revealed that his recent diagnosis has required him to spend a lot of time in a wheelchair.
"It's true that I do spend quite a bit of time in a wheelchair these days," he shared. "About 40 years ago, I was diagnosed with spinal stenosis, most likely due to an early slipped disc. After an operation and a long recovery, I was able to return to my active lifestyle of dancing and riding."
Unfortunately, Lord Julian was informed a few years ago that the condition had returned. Despite another operation, he has realized that his body's ability to recover at 75 is not the same as it was at 35. However, he maintains a positive attitude and recognizes that others are dealing with far more challenging circumstances.
"I am not completely immobile, but I do have to spend most of my time sitting down," he explained. "But I don't consider myself unlucky. There are people who have much more difficult challenges to face."
Lord Julian has been married to his wife, Emma Kitchener, for several decades. Emma is a former lady-in-waiting to Princess Michael of Kent, and the couple has one child together named Peregrine Charles Morant Kitchener-Fellowes, who was born in 1991.
Despite his health concerns, Lord Julian has remained active in his career, with the third Downton Abbey film set to be released this year. He has also recently announced that he will be adapting Donna Leon's popular Detective Brunetti series for television. Additionally, The Gilded Age, Lord Julian's series on HBO, is currently in production for its third season.
