In a remarkable feat of medical expertise, a team of doctors at AIIMS Bhubaneswar has successfully performed a rare scalp tumour operation on a 51-year-old man from West Bengal. According to officials, the patient had sought treatment at various medical institutions before finally arriving at the Department of Plastic Surgery at our institute.
Led by the executive director, Ashutosh Biswas, the multidisciplinary team at AIIMS worked tirelessly to devise a treatment plan for the patient. The team consisted of experts in interventional radiology, surgical oncology, neurosurgery, plastic surgery, anesthesiology, and pathology, all working under the guidance of Sanjay Kumar Giri, head of the department of burns and plastic surgery.
This groundbreaking surgery, which is only the second of its kind in India, was performed on Rabindra Bishui, who had been suffering from a scalp swelling for over 20 years. The swelling, which was later identified as a 7 kg synovial sarcoma tumour, had proven to be a formidable challenge for conventional treatment methods.
The surgery itself took around 7 hours to complete and was a highly intricate procedure. It involved the ligation of the left external carotid artery and posterolateral neck dissection, ultimately resulting in the successful removal of the tumour. The patient was then closely monitored and received intensive care for 24 hours before being moved to the ward for further observation and recovery.
This achievement is a testament to the dedication and expertise of the team at AIIMS Bhubaneswar, who have once again proven their capabilities in the field of medicine. We are proud to have been able to provide the patient with the necessary care and treatment, ultimately leading to a successful outcome.
