Doctors were left baffled after making a confusing discovery during a 63-year-old man's routine colon cancer screening in Missouri, US. During the colonoscopy, they found a fly, fully intact and alive, inside the man's intestines.

It has been known for flies and their larvae to infest the human intestines in rare cases, usually when they eat eggs and larvae. This has been linked to rotten bananas, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said that myiasis can cause abdominal pain, vomiting and diarrhoea in some patients, while others may suffer no symptoms at all. The condition is thought to be more common during the warmer months of April to September, when there are more flies.
The University of Missouri School of Medicine declined to comment further, leaving the mystery of how the fly got into the man's intestines unsolved.
