Sinéad O'Connor, the beloved Grammy-winning singer and songwriter, tragically passed away on Wednesday at the age of 56. This news sparked an outpouring of grief from fans and leading entertainment figures, including Russell Crowe and Sharon Horgan.
In memory of the late Irish star, director Kathryn Ferguson has decided to go ahead with the planned broadcast of the documentary Nothing Compares, which had been scheduled to be released on Sky Documentaries and Now from July 29. In her tweet, Ferguson stated that this decision was made after “lots of thought” and that screening the film this weekend “is the right thing to do”, so that people can “hear her tell her side of the story”.
The documentary, which was originally screened at the Sundance World Cinema Documentary Competition 2022, and was released in cinemas last October, explores the late star's rise to fame after the release of her version of Nothing Compares 2 U, as well as the backlash she faced over her protests. It also features content from some of her music videos and concert performances, previously unseen footage, and a more recent interview.
The synopsis of the documentary reads that it “ties together intimate first-hand interviews and insights from contemporary artists, musicians and social commentators who introduce broader themes of Irish history, politics, and global activism, all the while reflecting on Sinéad’s artistry and far-reaching, global impact”.
Ferguson has said that making the programme was a “tremendous privilege” and that she hopes it will “serve as a reminder of [O’Connor’s] greatness”. She also described the singer as “a special, funny and magnificent human being” and said that her “fire lit a torch for so many of us, particularly those who grew up in the 1990s, and those who really needed her light”.
Nothing Compares will air on Sky Documentaries at 9pm and is available on subscription service Now, and available to watch on Sky Showcase and Sky Arts. Let's remember the woman for her radical, magical ways and all she has done for us.
