DJ Kool Herc and Cindy Campbell to headline panel discussing hip-hop's pioneers at the Kennedy Center.
The celebration of the birth of hip-hop continues! On Friday, Sept. 29, 2023, the Kennedy Center will host a panel discussion titled “From 1520 Sedgwick Avenue to the World—A Fireside Chat with DJ Kool Herc and Cindy Campbell”. The brother and sister duo are known as the father and first lady of hip-hop and they will discuss the movement and culture of hip-hop.

The discussion will be moderated by Grammy-nominated producer 9th Wonder, who is also a DJ, college lecturer, music executive, and social activist. The panel will talk about how the party at 1520 Sedgwick Avenue in the Bronx on August 11, 1973 spawned a movement that has now become a multibillion-dollar industry.

Earlier this year, DJ Kool Herc was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in the Musical Influence Award category. The Kennedy Center also announced its 2023–2024 Hip Hop season, which includes celebrating the 50th anniversary of hip-hop.

Members of the hip-hop community expected to participate in the programs and discussions this fall season include Lupe Fiasco, T3 of Slum Village, Rapsody, D-Nice, Wale, Clipse, Grandmaster Flash, and Black Thought. The next series on the calendar is “Hometown Heroes, Global Icons” on Sunday, Oct. 29, 2023, followed by “Sound Architects: A Producer Conversation with Timbaland.”

It is an exciting time for the hip-hop community and its members as they celebrate the 50th anniversary of the movement. We can only imagine what the next 50 years of hip-hop will bring.
