The music world has been rocked by the sudden death of Irish singer-songwriter Sinéad O’Connor, which was confirmed by her family on Thursday night. Fans and celebrities have paid tribute to the late artist, who was a huge inspiration to many.
Kathryn Ferguson, the director of a documentary about O’Connor’s life and career, has spoken out about the impact the singer had on her.
Speaking to BBC Radio 4’s Front Row show a few hours after her death was announced, Ferguson said she was ‘devastated’.
‘Our film, really for me, it was a love letter to Sinead,’ she said. ‘It was made over many, many years and made because of the impact she had made on me as a young girl growing up in Ireland.’
Ferguson was introduced to O’Connor’s music by her father in the late 80s, and said it quickly became a ‘visceral soundtrack’ to her childhood. ‘In the early 90s my friends and I really discovered her for a second time and could really see how she looked, heard what she had to say, and she became this huge icon of ours, and someone we were so proud of,’ she added.
The documentary, called Nothing Compares, will focus on infamous moments such as O’Connor ripping up a photo of the Pope in 1992, as well as her turbulent life and her battle against an image-obsessed music industry. It will be released this weekend on Sky Documentaries and Now.
The loss of O’Connor has been felt by many around the world, and her legacy will live on for generations to come.
