Destiny Drake West aims to be the first Black woman to serve in Congress from Maryland.
Destiny Drake West is making history. The congressional candidate recently announced that she is expecting her fourth child and also declared that she is committed to representing the citizens of Maryland’s 6th District in the U.S. House of Representatives. If elected, West will be the first Black woman to assume this role and the first woman to serve in Congress from the state of Maryland since 2016.

West’s foray into politics was motivated by her own background. Born into an impoverished family, she has a unique insight into the struggles faced by marginalized people such as women and working families. This has led to her understanding of issues like gender pay disparities, affordable childcare, paid maternity and paternity leave, and reproductive rights.

The candidate looks to her own success story as motivation, as she strives to help families in her district gain access to opportunities that will set them up for economic growth and security.

“I entered this race because I believe, more than anything else, our district needs a working mother in Congress who understands that poverty is not a Democrat or Republican issue,” West said. “Right now, one-third of our families are struggling to make ends meet and the only thing standing in the way of finding common-sense solutions to these economic challenges is a lack of political will in Washington. This pregnancy will not deter me from my mission. If anything, it strengthens my resolve to run this race to the end.”

West’s dedication to her cause has not gone unnoticed. Dr. Don Trahan, Jr., a certified diversity executive, has praised her for her excellence in politics. “Destiny has the ability to navigate the complex landscape of running for Congress as a woman of color, where gender biases and inequalities still persist,” said Trahan.

Maryland has not had a woman in Congress since 2016. Destiny Drake West is determined to change this. She is confident that her understanding of the issues and her dedication to the cause will help her to make history.
