David Betancourt fulfills a Marvel dream by writing the newest 'Avengers' book.
David Betancourt is a testament to the dreams that can be accomplished when you dedicate yourself to something. Growing up in a family of comic book readers, the Afro-Latino writer developed a passion for comics after his father, a Marvel fan, introduced him to the art form as a youngster. This passion has taken him to new heights, as he now writes for The Washington Post and is the author of the new Marvel book, The Avengers Assembled: The Origin Story of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.

In an interview with NBC News, Betancourt shared his Marvel origin story. He was on a Zoom call with several authors, including Lucasfilm creative director Michael Siglain, to write a story based on a new Star Wars publishing initiative. Betancourt believes that Siglain realized he was not simply a writer covering Star Wars, but was somebody who was truly into the material. After the story was published, Siglain reached out to Betancourt and offered him the opportunity to write an Avengers novel.

Betancourt was ecstatic, but also had doubts about his ability to take on such a large project. He had written a comic book before, but writing a 300-page book is a completely different beast. However, he decided to take the challenge and prove to himself that he could do it.

The book is about the history of “the greatest superhero team of all time” and includes the back story of the characters. One of the biggest challenges Betancourt faced was figuring out what to include, as there is 60 years of comics material. He and Marvel decided to focus on the original team that was introduced in 1963, which was the best way to tell the origin story.

Betancourt is proud of the opportunity he has been given and hopes that Black kids can also accomplish their dreams. He advises aspiring writers to write their own stories because you will never know where it will take you.
