Hall & Oates, once the power couple of pop music, have been locked in a legal dispute. 77-year-old Daryl Hall has requested a temporary restraining order against John Oates, who is 75, and the judge granted it.
The court documents are sealed so the details of the dispute are unclear. However, it's been suggested that Hall might have taken issue with Oates singing Hall & Oates' songs while on his solo tour or possibly a disagreement over royalties.
Hall & Oates shot to fame in the 70s with hits like Rich Girl and Maneater, quickly becoming a household name and continuing to see chart success into the 90s. Despite never officially splitting up, the pair have been working on solo projects for many years now, with their last studio album together, a Christmas album, released in 2006.
The duo have performed their hits both together and separately on tours throughout the decades, including a performance in Dublin in 2014 that was released as a live album. As recently as 2019, they embarked on a European tour and had dates stretching all the way to last year in the US.
In a discussion on Bill Maher's Club Random podcast, Hall appeared to disparage Oates and his position in the band. He referred to him as his business partner, not a creative partner, and said: “We’ve always been very separate, and that’s a really important thing for me." He then went on to take full credit for their hit song Kiss on My List, saying, “I did all those [harmonies]. That’s all me.”
It's unclear what the future holds for the iconic duo. Metro has reached out to Hall and Oates representatives for comment, but until then, all we can do is wait and see.
