Curtis confirms future plans for Blackadder 24 years after last episode.
Have our prayers finally been answered? It's been 24 long years since the last episode of Blackadder graced our screens, but writer Richard Curtis has recently hinted at some exciting plans for the beloved sitcom in the works.
It's hard to believe that it all started back in 1989 with the first episode of this farcical British TV series. It introduced us to the cunning and conniving Edmund Blackadder, brought to life by the talented Rowan Atkinson. Co-created by Rowan and Richard, the show went on to become a cultural phenomenon, running for six years and producing 24 episodes along with four specials, the last of which aired in 1999.
In an interview with Metro's Tori Brazier for 60 Seconds, Richard addressed the possibility of a Blackadder comeback, as well as his latest festive film for Netflix, That Christmas. When asked about his previous statement that he wasn't interested in reviving Blackadder, Richard gave an intriguing response. "Well, oddly, Rowan and I have a plan for something we might do which would just be a bit of fun sometime in the next few years," he shared. "I'd love to work with Rowan one more time on something."
Fans of Blackadder would love to see the reunion of Edmund and his trusty sidekick Baldrick, played by Tony Robinson. Each season of the show was set in a different time period, including the First World War and the reign of Queen Elizabeth I.
From Mr. Bean to Bridget Jones' Diary, Love Actually, and Four Weddings and a Funeral, Richard has had an incredibly successful career creating comedy gold. His latest venture, the animated film That Christmas, is now available on Netflix and features an all-star cast including Brian Cox, Fiona Shaw, Jodie Whittaker, and Lolly Adefope.
When speaking about the film, Richard shared that it was a welcome change to not have to write as many swear words as he usually does in his works. "In About Time, they said to me, if you can get it down to 16 swear words, it can be a PG or whatever it was. And I remember saying to the editor, 'Well, that's great, there are only like 20!'" he recalled. "And he said, 'Look, I'll count them.' And he came back the next day and said there were 76 swear words – so it was lovely for me to be able to behave better."
He also expressed his excitement to work with talented actresses Jodie Whittaker and Fiona Shaw, and the challenge of bringing Santa to life through the voice of Brian Cox. "We were wondering, for instance, should we make him American? Then we thought, no, he should be Scottish," Richard shared.
Blackadder can currently be streamed on ITVX, and That Christmas is available on Netflix.
