In a disheartening turn of events, it appears Texas schools are sending a damaging message - standing up for a Black student comes at a cost.
Gabriana Clay-White, a former guidance counselor, recently filed a lawsuit in Dallas County claiming she was forced to resign after reporting an incident involving a special needs student and teacher. Clay-White says the student was called a "dumb n**ger" and the teacher pulled a chair out from under him and stepped on him.
The suit doesn't mention the student or teacher involved, nor the school where the incident occurred, but the paperwork was filed against the Grand Prairie Independent School District.
Clay-White said she was asked to help a teacher with the student who had special needs and asked what happened. The student stated the teacher took his chips and called her "dumb." The teacher then approached the student and asked "Oh, I'm dumb?" before pulling the chair from beneath the student.
The teacher then used the racial slur directed at the student and their blue shirt, which the lawsuit states the student wore and also had a reading-related learning disability. The teacher continued to pull the chair from beneath the student and Clay-White intervened and took the student out of the classroom.
The student attempted to hit the teacher but missed and fell to the ground. The teacher then stepped on the student's chest and said "The only b*tch is your mom." Clay-White reported the incident to school officials and Child Protective Services the following day.
The next day, after filing the report, Clay-White was called in by human resources to provide a third statement about what happened. On June 2, 2022, human resources told Clay-White that she violated the ethics code and could resign or get fired. She chose to resign under duress and is now seeking damages, including back pay.
The Grand Prairie Independent School District claim they were unaware of the lawsuit and that Clay-White resigned from the district on June 3, 2022.
It's incredibly concerning that an employee feels they must choose between standing up for a Black student and losing their job. It's a reminder of the racism and injustice that still exists in our society today.
