The Mumbai Metropolitan Regional Development Authority has achieved remarkable progress in the development of a comprehensive metro network across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Of the 4,929 pillars planned to connect Mumbaikars to different parts of the MMR, 3,603 have already been constructed, which is a completion rate of 73.09%.
The six metro lines currently under construction include Metro 2B, Metro 4, Metro 4A, Metro Line 5 Phase I, Metro Line 6, and Metro Line 9. To minimise disruptions to public traffic and ensure safety, the MMRDA has taken the initiative to cast and erect heavy-weight precast elements such as pier caps, U-girders, and I-girders at night.
The metropolitan commissioner of MMRDA, Dr Sanjay Mukherjee, said, “We are prioritising the completion of Mumbai Metro corridors as quickly as possible. The recently inaugurated Metro corridors of 2A and 7 have been providing relief to lakhs of commuters and are contributing to reduced highway traffic and pollution. We are appointing a consultant to obtain various permissions for Metro 10 between Gaimukh and Shivaji Chowk. Additionally, a general consultant has been appointed and the tendering process for the civil works is underway for Metro Line 12.”
The completion of these metro lines will establish a significant alternative rail-based public transportation system to the suburban train lines in the MMR, which currently cater to around 62.50 lakh passengers daily on a weekday. The ridership was higher than this before the pandemic, at about 76.34 lakh. Recently, the metro has become the preferred travel mode for commuters with more than 2 lakh passengers travelling in a span of 24 hours.
