Congresswoman Williams' bill to provide grants to minority entrepreneurs gains support.
Congresswoman Nikema Williams is dedicated to closing the racial wealth gap in the United States. To do so, she has proposed the Minority Entrepreneurship Grant Program Act of 2023. This bill seeks to provide grants up to $250,000 to institutions and Historically Black Colleges and Universities in the United States. The grants are to be used for student entrepreneurs and startups to help them launch their businesses.

Congresswoman Williams strongly believes that this bill will help create equity in entrepreneurship opportunities for all. “Too often, Black and Brown entrepreneurs face enormous barriers to accessing the capital needed to launch and sustain businesses,” she explained. “The Minority Entrepreneurship Grant Program will help to break down those barriers and ensure that the next generation of minority business owners have a fair shot at the promise of America.”

The Minority Entrepreneurship Grant Program Act of 2023 has gained support from both sides of the aisle. Democratic representatives Alma Adams of North Carolina, Dwight Evans of Pennsylvania and Norma Torres of California, and Republican Brian Fitzpatrick have all signed on as co-sponsors. Fitzpatrick has expressed his enthusiasm for the bill, saying, “Small businesses are the backbone of our economy and allow communities to flourish. The bipartisan Minority Entrepreneurship Grant Program Act will empower minority innovators and entrepreneurs to start their own small businesses and I’m proud to join my colleagues on this legislation.”

Congresswoman Williams previously proposed a similar bill last year, but it did not gain much traction. This year, however, the Minority Entrepreneurship Grant Program Act of 2023 has gathered much more support and is looking to be a promising piece of legislation. Williams is hopeful that the bill will pass and help to create a brighter future for all business owners, regardless of their background.
