Former St. Augustine's University football coach Howard Feggins recently filed a lawsuit against the university, VP of Business Administration Gwendolyn Kea, and Interim AD Stephen Larson. His suit claims a breach of contract, breach of the implied covenant of good faith & fair dealing, fraudulent/negligent misrepresentation, and tortious interference with contractual relations.
Feggins believes that the parties acted outside the scope of their positions at St. Augustine’s University and that his termination wasn’t related to any legitimate business interest. According to the suit, the defendants had a personal animus towards the coach and fired him after he reported and/or refused to engage in potentially wrongful conduct.
Feggins has a wealth of coaching experience and has held positions at Eastern Michigan University, Norfolk State University, South Carolina State University, and the New England Patriots. His only season at St. Augustine's ended with a 0-10 record and the Falcons struggled significantly on offense, scoring less than 20 points in all 10 games they played.
The suit also claims that the St. Augustine's University administrators knew their Athletic Department wasn't in healthy financial shape and that they had misrepresented the state of the program to Feggins. On top of that, Feggins believes St. Augustine’s athletic department was violating NCAA rules, leading to his eventual termination.
Feggins is now requesting a judgment against all Defendants for compensatory damages over $25,000, plus interest as allowed by law. The university's last winning season came in 2012 when the Falcons went 6-4, and since 2017, they have not won more than two games in a single season.
