Claire Sweeney makes her debut on Coronation Street as the heroin addicted daughter of Evelyn.
Evelyn is in for a shock when her supposedly 'dead' daughter Cassie arrives on the Coronation Street cobbles. Cassie, played by Claire Sweeney, is a far cry from her Brookside local-turned-gangster character Lindsey Corkhill.

The mother of Tyrone Dobbs, Cassie is in a bad way, consumed by a heroin addiction and in need of help. Claire explains: "She's an addict and that's what makes her so unpredictable. That makes her a loose cannon and she really does have great intentions to get better and to be with the family, but she's an addict and it is quite sad really."

Claire is loving the chance to take on a very different role to what she is used to. She has undergone a major transformation to play heroin addict Cassie, with the help of the show's make-up team. "It wasn't much, that's how I wake up in the morning!" she jokes. "They've done a fantastic job. I had to get my nails off – and as a Scouser getting the nails and the lashes off, that's quite traumatic!"

Despite being soap royalty already, Claire admitted that she felt like an 'imposter' when she first walked onto the cobbles. She said: "I'm so grateful for this job and to be playing Cassie. I said before if it was Hollywood or Corrie, give me Corrie any day! It's an institution. It's the soap we've all grown up with."

Claire has promised some very big material ahead for her character. "She's gonna cause havoc!" she assured us. "My first big scene written by Ian Kershaw was just wonderful. The writing is fantastic, but I'm starting to read scripts now, which are quite funny as well. Not only have you got great dramatic storylines, you've also got that wonderful Corrie humour, which we love."

Thanks to Coronation Street boss Iain MacLeod, Claire is living her dream. She said: "The last few years, I've done a little bit on Benidorm, Scarborough, a drama I filmed last year, not massive parts, but wanting to get back and do some really great acting. I never dreamed Corrie would be the theme. Iain has given me a chance and it just takes that one person to believe in you and go 'yeah, you can do it. Give her a chance.' And I'm so grateful for that." Cassie is sure to be an unforgettable character in the Street, just like Lindsey Corkhill in Brookside!
